HISTORY & LOCATION With 50 years of breeding behind them the Wauldby Stud offers the best genetic material available in the Dohne Merino industry. It is also unique in the sense that, for three generations its owners, the Blaine family of Amabele ( 70 kilometres inland from East London) in the Eastern Cape, have rendered most outstanding service to the development of the breed and the administration of the Society. The decision by Deemie Blaine in 1947 to start stud breeding with Dohne Merinos proved to be a wise step indeed. The Dohne Merino has become a major role player in the industry. The Wauldby Stud has been successful primarily as a result of the policy initiated by Deemie Blaine to breed and rear sheep on the natural sourveld - a policy which has been strictly followed over the years. This policy established the natural hardiness for which Wauldby Dohnes are renowned. Even before the Society was formed in 1966, the Wauldby Stud had spawned a number of daughter studs, most notable of which is the Normandy Stud which has twice earned the National Top Breeder Award. There is a consistent demand for Wauldby sires from many studs throughout the country. |
BREEDING SYSTEMS AND GENETIC TRENDS Breeding and selection systems are applied strictly according to the standards and recommendations of the Society. Strict selection in an Open Nucleus system ensures that only the top 10% of the young commercial females are elevated to stud level each year. Always in the forefront of the latest developments the Wauldby Stud was one of the first to join the North East Cape Sire Reference Scheme (NEC SRS) in 1992. In the NEC SRS the participating studs subject themselves to across-flock comparisons. This motivates members to strive for a continuous genetic improvement in their studs. Selection objectives set for the Wauldby Stud are in line with objectives required to generate optimum gross margins in the South African economic climate. The genetic trends are in accordance with selection objectives, which are to increase body weight, maintain fleece weight and reduce fibre diameter. |
