INTRODUCTION

Glen Craig is situated on top of the Bosberg, in the district of Somerset East, only two hours drive from Port Elizabeth. The Guest House is fully equipped for self-catering. With breathtaking scenery, it affords guests the opportunity to view a large variety of birds and game in habitats ranging from sourveld and mountain forest to acacia bushveld!

CLIMATE AND RAINFALL

This is a summer rainfall region, but soft rainfall also occurs in winter. The average annual rainfall is 625 mm.

The climate is moderate - warm summers and mild sunny winters with occasional frost at night.

ANIMALS

Kudu, Rhebuck, Springbuck, Duiker, Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Jackals and Caracal occur.

BIRDING

Because of the range of different habitats, a large variety of birds occur. Birds such as Black eagles, Blue Cranes, Cape Vultures occur and Jackal Buzzards may be seen in abundance.

HIKING

The two-day Glen Craig Hiking Trail traverses breathtaking scenery. The route runs through sourveld, along the Naude's River, with views over indigenous forest. There are spectacular views of the beautiful Glen Avon Falls. The trail proceeds above the Naude's River to the Charlton Falls, from where it continues through most beautiful red grass natural pasture in the "Smaldeel" to the other side of the mountain. Here the vegetation changes to mainly thorn trees with scenery similar to the bushveld.

The shorter route (12,5 km) is mainly through thorn tree veld, over ridges with beautiful views to various sides.

VEGETATION

The natural vegetation comprises of sourveld, indigenous bush and trees like the wild olive, white stinkwood, Outeniqua yellowwood, Kipersol, Acacias and aloes. Planted pine plantations have been established for stock shelter.

FRESHWATER FISHING

The beautiful dams are stocked with trout and fly fishing is available to the visitor.

ACCOMMODATION

The Glen Craig Guest House is a restored old farmhouse, which is fully equipped with the following:

l 11 Beds, with Bedding

l Gas fridge and stove

l Cutlery and crockery

l Bathroom with hot water (bring own towels)

l Built-in braai on stoep

l Fireplace

l Candles and gas lamps

HIKERS HOUSE

A restored three bedroom stone house with breathtaking views. There is sleeping space for 12 hikers.

Other conveniences include an outside flush toilet, hot water shower, and a lapa with braai grill and wood.

The same overnight accommodation is used for the two-day route.

HUNTING

Hunting can be arranged at additional cost.

4X4 ROUTE

There is a route for 4X4 enthusiasts and mountain bikers.

HOW TO GET TO GLENCRAIG

The turnoff to Glen Craig is between Somerset East and Cookhouse. Turn North at the Glen Avon turnoff and follow the signs and proceed for 23 km.
